Hot Dog

Why are they called Hot Dogs? Some years ago while we were talking about the cruelty around dog eating that happens in some Far Eastern societies, I was told not to be too uppity about this since up until the start of the 20th century dog meat consumption had been quite common in Western countries as well. Why did I think that Hot Dogs were called Hot Dogs? Back then, I searched for this online and sure enough I found quite a few resources that verified this. And not only Hot Dogs - that apparently it is quite common to eat dogs in some mountain regions of Europe, especially in Switzerland, to this very day. Looking again today, I am no longer finding these links - like so much else on the internet, this topic too seems to have been sanitized. Instead what I found were cute tales about German immigrants and their Dachshounds, and how the Hot Dog was named after them. So, who knows?

Anyway, origins aside, I am not too fond of Hot Dogs myself. I put two recipes here, the second would possibly do, with the Mayo and the grease of the bacon. But the regular Hot Dog I have always found to be too dry. But, my likings aside, this is a food with a tradition, with tales and memories attached to it, a food that evokes a feeling. And these are the sorts of things that I also look for when I am looking for food to put on this blog. So, here it is - the Hot Dog.


So, here are not only one but 2 recipes for hot dogs that I dug up. First up is something that appears to be more along the lines of the traditional American Hot Dog. The second one is more to my liking, what with mayo and all! :-D



CHICAGO STYLE HOT DOG INGREDIENTS
  • 1 all-beef hot dog
  • 1 poppy seed hot dog bun
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sweet green pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon chopped onion
  • 4 tomato wedges
  • 1 dill pickle spear
  • 2 sport peppers
  • 1 dash celery salt


INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1
Bring a pot of water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, place hot dog in water, and cook until warmed through, about 5 minutes. Remove hot dog from water and set aside.

Step 2
Place a steamer basket into the pot and steam poppy seed bun until warm, about 2 minutes.

Step 3
Place hot dog in steamed bun. Pile on toppings in this order: mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle, peppers, and celery salt. The tomato wedges should be nestled between hot dog and top of bun on one side. Place pickle between hot dog and bottom of bun on the other side. Don't even think about ketchup!

BLT DOG INGREDIENTS

  • 4 slices bacon
  • 4 hot dogs
  • 1/2 c. mayonnaise
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1 c. shredded romaine
  • 1 c. Sliced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp. finely chopped chives


INSTRUCTIONS
  • Tightly wrap each hot dog with bacon. 
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook hot dogs, turning frequently with tons, until bacon is crispy and cooked through, 12 minutes. 
  • Meanwhile, spread mayonnaise onto each hot dog bun, then layer in romaine and tomatoes. Top with bacon-wrapped hot dog and sprinkle with chives before serving.
